Spanish Rhythm – playing with a pick

Arabic guitar Rhythms can be played with a pick. This can be a good alternative sometimes since the pick can give you a stronger sound if your nails are not well grown. You can apply the same techniques of the basic Spanish rhythm and the one with palm muting to be played with a pick. It is preferable that you use a soft guitar pick (.5 or .6 strength) if you are playing on a classical guitar (with nylon strings).

Below is the Basic Spanish Guitar Rhythm. All the strokes including the bass note are strummed with the pick.

Same as we did when strumming with fingers, we can add a palm mute step to the Basic Spanish guitar rhythm played with a pick. When doing the muting, you will not be able to spread your hand as you did before since you are holding the pick with two fingers. Instead, twist your hand and mute the strings with the right side of your palm. Check the video to get the idea.

To play an easier version of the above rhythm, you can omit the second upward stroke (the one after the mute step). This will also give a nice sounding rhythm but it will not be as rich as the previous one.
