D is D major
Dm is D minor- same chord with a different twist to it (one half musical degree less than the Major)
A is A major
Am is A minor -same chord with a different twist to it (one half musical degree less than the Major)

each same chord can be played different ways , thats why you see 2 to 3 drawings for each chord. You choose the way to play the chord by choosing which chord (drawing) best fits the song and goes in tune with the other chords in the song.
for example look at the G chord above. you can play either the first or second drawings and you should get the same tune. The third one (one to the far right) , you should only play if other chords you are playing are close to the tenth Fret (that is the number 10)
kind of the same if you are playing the piano, try playing the same notes on different octaves , the tune is the same, but with different pitch.
hope this helped and did not confuse you

hi, i am a beginner in guitar stuff, but i have a question, what does it mean when the same finger no. (1, 2, 3 or 4) can be at the same fret but in different string at the same time and there is a symbol of arc. for example chord C minor (alternative one) the finger (no.1) in (fret 3) is in two places (A string) and (High E string) and there is an arc between them???!!!...thanks in advance

Hi, it means you have to extend the index finger accross the fretboard (this is called barred chord)
check this video or simply google Cm chord to see an example:

hope this helps
