Adding a Rasgueado to the Advanced Baladi rhythm

Just when you thought the advanced Rhythm cannot get any more complicated, we are going to spice it up now by adding a Rasgueado to it (yes, a Spanish Rasgueado technique to an Arabic traditional rhythm!).

In case you haven’t read the Spanish Rhythm tutorials yet, a Rasgueado (pronounced Raz-Gya-Do) is a finger strumming technique used in flamenco music. It uses the index, middle, ring and pinky (optional) to play three (or four) separate and sequential downward strokes. The Rasgueado will be added to the final part of the Rhythm. Below are the steps and the diagram. Please try not to get overwhelmed by the diagram as it makes things looks harder than they really are. Just watch the video and you’ll get the idea.

1. Downward stroke with the thumb (T) on the Bass note only.

2. Downward stroke of all the chord’s strings with the index finger (I)

3. One Downward stroke, one upward stroke and another downward one played fast after each other, all with the index finger (I)

4. Downward stroke with the thumb (T) on the Bass note only.

5. Rasgueado; four downward sequential strokes: Pinky (P), Ring (R), Middle (M) and Index (I)

6. One upward stroke and another downward one. Both played with the index finger (I)

Note that in step 6, the upward stroke can be played with the thumb instead. You might find this alternative easier for you.

6. One upward stroke with Thumb (T)

7. One downward stroke with Index (I)

You can complicate the above technique even more by adding two extra strums at the end of the rhythm to fill the sound gap. Check out the video below to get the idea

6. One upward stroke with Thumb (T)

7. Two downward strokes with Index (I), followed by a final upward one with the Thumb (T)
